Sunday Weekly Recap
A few things that caught my attention or were noteworthy this week--
- Empire of the Summer Moon - Finished reading this tragic, violent, fascinating book this week. It is the story of the rise and fall of the Comanche empire through the Wild West. As a Texan, it was wild reading about these encounters that happened in some cases just miles from my home. As an American, it’s heartbreaking to face the cruel reality of our disastrous handling of an admittedly very complicated situation. It really requires just about every trigger/content warning imaginable, but is well worth wading through if you can stomach it.
- You Can’t Screw This Up - Started reading this after seeing everyone from Arnold Schwarzenegger to NerdFitness’ Steve Kamb recommending it. Only about 1/3 of the way through, but really enjoying the very practical, no BS approach to healthy eating. No diets, no “lose weight quick” promises-- just a down to earth approach to reconsidering how we think about nutrition.
- Diablo IV - After a bit of server issues, I was able to get in to the Diablo IV pre-released weekend fun. Only a few hours in, but I’m totally engrossed. It’s a great spin on the hack & slash RPG formular, and despite concerns about micro transactions, so far the “Store” does not seem to have any impact whatsoever on the game. Recommended if you’re about ready for a little break from looking high and low for Princess Zelda.
- 🗺️ Geocaching - Took the kiddos geocaching this weekend, first time in probably a year. It’s always such a delightful experience: a bit of adventure, a bit of treasure hunting. I’m also constantly delighted by the community, all the people who work so hard to plant and maintain these caches— We revisited a cache that we first found 4 years ago. It was a bit weathered, and even harder to find, but still kicking along, clearly maintained. FWIW, I’ve been a happy subscriber to Cachly for my iOS geocaching app of choice. It requires a separate, paid Geocaching.com account, but it’s worth it to me for the pretty UI.
- Clear 2.0 (Beta) - Some might remember, Clear, the whimsical, fun todo list app from a few years back. They’re back with a beta 2.0 that revamps the app. Having played around with the Test Flight for the last few weeks, I’ve got to say I love some gamification and unlockable themes / colors, but realistically, I don’t see this pulling me away from the much more boring (but better for my needs) OmniFocus.
- Fuji X Weekly - Fairly niche, but if you’re a Fuji photographer, this app is super fun. It’s a listing of “recipes” for in camera settings that you can use (Film Simulations + other customizations) to mimic all manner of classic film and camera looks. I’m having a blast playing around with these.
- 🌈 Pride - As a Texan, every time our state government does something stupid to further marginalize or persecute our LTBQIA+ communities, I make a donation to the Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund. Sadly, I wind up making a lot of these donations… Soooo, it feels great to make a celebratory Pride donation just for fun this month! Please consider joining me? https://transgenderlegal.org
